It was believed that near this courtyard our Lord was scourged by soldiers of the Antonia Fortress – however, archaeologists now conclude that in the first century, the Roman Governors carried out their judgements on the pavement immediately outside Herod’s Palace at Jaffa Gate and had those found guilty flogged there, rather than the area around the Church of the Flagellation.
